Voice cloning

Your voice is easy to copy now

A voice used to feel personal and hard to fake. Not any more. AI tools can now build a convincing copy of someone's voice from only a few seconds of recorded audio.

That audio is not hard to find. A short video on social media, a voice note, a clip from an interview or a livestream, even a voicemail greeting, can be enough. From that sample, the tool can make the cloned voice say anything the attacker types, in a natural tone, with the right accent.

The scam it powers

The most common use of voice cloning against ordinary people is the emergency-money call. It usually goes like this: you get a phone call, and the voice sounds like your child, a grandchild, a parent, or a close friend. They are upset. There has been an accident, an arrest, a hospital, a stranded trip. They need money right now, and they need you to keep it quiet.

Everything about the call is engineered to switch off your judgement:

  • A voice you love and trust, so you do not question who it is.
  • Fear, because someone you care about seems to be in danger.
  • Urgency, so you act before you think.
  • Secrecy, so you do not call anyone who might slow you down.

The same trick works against staff, where the cloned voice is a manager or executive urgently instructing someone to make a payment. The emotional lever changes from love to authority, but the mechanics are identical.

Two habits that beat it

You cannot easily tell a good clone from the real voice in the moment, especially when you are frightened. So the defence does not rely on your ear. It relies on a simple agreement made in advance and a habit of verifying.

Agree a family safe word. Choose a word or short phrase that only your family knows, something not posted anywhere online. If a call claims to be a relative in trouble and asking for money, you ask for the safe word. A real family member will know it. A cloned voice will not.

Verify through a separate, trusted channel. Whatever the call claims, hang up and reach the person yourself on a number you already have, or contact someone else close to them. Do not call back the number that just rang you, and do not rely on the caller to "prove" it on the same call. Confirm on a channel you chose.

Tip

Pick a family safe word today, before you ever need it, and make sure everyone who might be called knows it. It costs nothing, it is easy to remember, and a cloned voice cannot guess it. Pair it with one rule: any urgent request for money gets confirmed on a separate, trusted channel before you send anything.

The bottom line

A familiar voice used to be a reason to trust a call. Now it is exactly what an attacker manufactures. Slow down whenever a voice combines love or authority with fear, urgency and a request for money, and confirm before you act. Panic is the payload; your pause is the defence.
