ART-IN

Technology as artistic material.

What it was

ART-IN was a one-day creative-technology masterclass, “Technology for Art Installations”, built on a simple provocation: treat technology as a material for art. Light, sensors, data and interaction become the medium, the way paint or clay would be, and the question shifts from what a device does to what it can say. It is an alphaPlan Center initiative, and it carries the program's reach past the screen and into physical, felt experience.

How it worked

The day ran on a six-step method, “Idea to Installation”: concept development, technology selection, prototyping, integration, testing and refinement, and finally installation. Alongside it sat a framework called Installation Thinking, five questions to pressure-test any idea: what is its Message, how does the Interaction feel, what System drives it, how does it use Space, and is it Feasible. The materials were deliberately broad: LEDs and light, sensors that read motion, light, sound and the environment, microcontrollers such as Arduino and Raspberry Pi, software, and generative AI. Participants learned to reach for whichever of these carried the idea best.

What was made

Working from theme to prototype, participants designed and prototyped three concepts, each taking on climate and the natural world. None is a finished installation; each is a proof that the idea holds and knows how it would be built.

Forest Pulse

A tabletop forest cross-section where an LED strip fades from green to amber to red as simulated deforestation advances. Markers for endemic plants light up as rarity signatures, so the loss is not abstract but named.

The Silence Zoo

Small habitat boxes fitted with motion sensors. A healthy habitat answers a visitor's presence with warm light and sound; an endangered one stays dim; a polluted one replies with a harsh strobe and buzzer. The visitor learns which worlds still respond.

Last Signal

A row of small lights, each one an endangered Albanian species. The lights pulse, slow and go dark, and one is already dark from the start. A single control accelerates the shutdown, making human impact something you can trigger and watch.

What it seeded

ART-IN proved that the program's reach runs past the screen and into how young people see and shape the world. It left behind more than an afternoon: a repeatable method and a mentoring follow-up, artist statements, wiring diagrams and process notes, that participants carried forward into work of their own. The theme itself, what is made here and what goes missing without care, became something they could build with.
